### Description

The Common Core Standards for Mathematics emphasizes that students will use properties of multiplication for fact fluency and for problem-solving. Understanding and applying the multiplication properties are one part of achieving fluency with the multiplication facts in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. They are also important later for Algebra.

WHY USE THIS POWERPOINT TO TEACH THE PROPERTIES OF MULTIPLICATION?

This PowerPoint teaches the properties of multiplication through animation, definition, examples, and group interactions. Students use the included printables to show their understanding of the Associative Property, Commutative Property, Zero Property and Identity Property.

HOW IT WORKS

• The presentation has animations with sound to help your students understand key terms using concrete examples.
• Each property is self-contained within the presentation so that you can present each one separately and at your own pace.
• Students can use a math journal or the included printables to answer some fundamental questions regarding each property.
• The Presenter's Notes have a slide summary, animation instructions and questions to stimulate mathematical thinking.
• Use the included 22 printables as guided practice, independent work, exit tickets, homework or for intervention.
• Some of the printables are used with particular slides, while others are utilized after the presentation.
• There are printables to support English Language Learners: Vocabulary Key Words Chart, Properties of Multiplication Glossary and sentence frames.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

• Powerpoint with 37 slides for the 4 Properties of Multiplication
• a PDF file of the Presenter's Notes for the Teacher
• a PDF file of 22 printables

Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. Examples: If 6 × 4 = 24 is known, then 4 × 6 = 24 is also known. (Commutative property of multiplication.) 3 × 5 × 2 can be found by 3 × 5 = 15, then 15 × 2 = 30, or by 5 × 2 = 10, then 3 × 10 = 30. (Associative property of multiplication.) Knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56. (Distributive property.)
