Relate math to real life, and why not use multiplication to solve to the total amount of windows on different sections of a skyscraper!? And here are THREE SETS of differentiated word problems! This activity is so fun and the students are incredible engaged!
We call an arrangement of windows on a building an array if they are lined up in even rows and columns.
Before you begin these word problems, students will either have to design one building with multiple sections, or they will need to be given a building with multiple sections that have various arrays of windows. Check out the Multiplication Skyscraper activity on my page which can come before these word problems
In THIS project, there are THREE Differentiated sets of word problems. Students can use one building with multiple sections that they designed, OR a building with multiple sections that YOU designed. They need a building to solve the word problems.
In the first set of differentiated word problems titled Building 1, these word problems allow the students to only compute for the exact array shown on a building, without having to solve for anything else. These are very repetitive, one step word problems to get students in the routine of how to answer a word problem.
In the second set of differentiated word problems, students might be required to compute the exact array shown on a building, and then double that, subtract an amount or other basic computations.
In the third set of differentiated problems, students have to solve multi-step word problems with multiplication as well as other operations. This can be used for your highest learners, or as an extension.
Don't need the word problems or want a shorter activity? Check out Multiplication City on my page!
