Using the problem solving method, this lesson focusses the use of different strategies students may use when solving multiplication questions.
There are four parts to my lesson:
1. Activation Time
In this section, the teacher will spend about five to ten minutes to get the student's minds thinking about the concept that will be discussed in the lesson.
2. The Problem
In partners, students work through the problem. This should take approximately twenty minutes.
3. Making Sense Of It
The students will now share their work, explaining to the class how they solved the problem. Not every student will present, just the ones that the teacher selects that will be able to show different strategies the students used to solve the problem. Attempt to select a variety of strategies. Ensure that the teacher clears up any misconceptions. If a strategy was not shown by the students that you want shown, ensure you show it to the class.
4. Independent Practice
The students will now answer a problem that is very similar to the one they worked on in a partnership. This is the independent practice. The teacher will be able to quickly check who understands it and who does not. This can guide your next math lesson.
