Practicing Multiplication Strategies With a One Page Organizer (2x2 digits & 3x2 digits)- After introducing my students to 3 different multiplication strategies: area models, partial products, and the standard algorithm (lattice is not included), I wanted to give my students an organizer so they could show me how to solve the same problem three different ways. I wanted them to show me the three different strategies when multiplying a two digit by two digit and also a three digit by a two digit number.
This is a one page organizer that can be used over and over again. You can give students the numbers to multiply or you can have them pick their own numbers. Make lots of copies for continued practice, especially if you are needing to work with a small group of struggling students.
How is this organizer set up?
On the top half of the page students will solve two digit by two digit multiplication problems. You can have them use the same problem for all three strategies (which is what I like to do), or you can give them different problems. They will simply write in the problem you give them. For example, when you give them a two digit number times a two digit number, they will first show an area model, they will then solve it the partial products strategy, and then they will show the standard algorithm for multiplication.
On the bottom half of the organizer they will do the same thing but with a three digit by a two digit multiplication problem.
A sample sheet is provided, so you can see how I use it. There is a blank copy for you to use over and over. You can hand write the problems you want your kids to solve and then make copies or you can just tell them and they can fill in the blanks (which is what I do). Either way you choose, it's easy to use.
