Learn to use the distributive property to solve multiplication problems. This resource is designed to help parents develop skills that will help their children develop multiplication fluency. Not every student will memorize the multiplication facts, but that doesn't mean these students can't learn them.
This file includes a 2 page lesson aimed at parents, it includes pictures and examples and plain language that describe the distributive property and how breaking down larger numbers into facts students might already know can help them develop automaticity with multiplication without memorization!
The file also includes 4 progressive practice pages, walking the parent through the steps to understanding how to use this strategy for solving multiplication problems. After the parent is confident with the process, the pages can be used again for the child.
I've also included answer keys for each of the worksheets. There are many answers possible for many of the problems, I only included the answers that are most helpful to students developing automaticity.
I put this resource together as part of a blog post on developing strategies for multiplication when memorization doesn't seem possible. You can read it here.
