My third graders begin multiplication timed tests in our second grading period of the year. I have them use ice cream scoops to keep track of their progress and we post them on our windows in the classroom using double-sided tape. The cone has room at the top for the student's name. I print these on cardstock and ask the students to color them all with crayon, colored pencil, or marker. All students are allowed to post their cone with their x0 and x1 facts scoop. They store their scoops in their classroom currency wallets (a dollar store coupon organizer) until they have mastered each fact set. We begin with multiples of 2 and work our way up, sequentially. Once students master facts through x12 they move on to mixed facts tests. The mastery goal is 30 facts within 1 minute, but I administer the tests from multiplication.com with 36 facts (I print them out) for a 2 minute timed test. This helps students build confidence and gives me the opportunity to really target remediation needs with particular students.
