Product Description
This unit includes 8 important lessons with activities and examples. I believe in teaching why before how using the CRA (Concrete - Representational - Abstract) model. Using this unit has been extremely worthwhile for my students and me. My partner teacher and I are the only 3rd grade math teachers in our Title I school, teaching almost 200 kids of all abilities, and our test scores show our success. For two years in a row (2012 and 2013 transitioning from GPS to CCGPS), we have had 95% or better pass the Math CRCT in 3rd grade with 65% or better exceeding, and students have a much deeper understanding of multiplication, which has followed them to 4th and 5th grades.

This is Unit 1 for introducing multiplication (CC.3.OA.1), which includes 8 whole group/small group lessons with activities and instructions. Unit 2 (sold separately) is great for math centers for students to use in a small group setting or to do individually immediately following Unit 1. Certainly, you can use problems from your own text or resources for these lessons, but I have found that following this order ensures a deeper understanding of multiplication from the top to the bottom. Students are ready to work independently and move on to Unit 2.

Also, check out Product 36, the best strategies proven to help students learn the multiplications facts quickly and with fluency! You will love it!!!

How did I develop this unit? I have adapted many strategies I have read about and practiced and have found that this is what has been most successful for me over the years. I have learned about teaching multiplication from sources in college, in teacher resource books, and from fellow/veteran teachers. I have learned what works from my kids.

***I found a mistake after submitting this unit for sale. Please note that when I referred to Cuisenaire Rods, I meant Unifix Cubes. Thank you :)
