This 11 page lesson uses word problems and drawing pictures to help introduce multiplication to your students. It should be used at the beginning of your multiplication unit. The lesson is broken into five sections. In Baltimore County, we call this a 5E lesson. Each "E” stands for a different piece of learning throughout the lesson. The "5E's" are engage, explore, explain, extend, and evaluate. The evaluation piece of this lesson is broken into three questions. Each question will ask your students to draw an example of a problem or use a picture to solve a problem. There is also a small writing piece included with the last evaluation question. The extension portion of this lesson includes two variations. The first extension is centered on drawing pictures for multiplication word problems. The second extension piece will have your students use arrays to make multiplication number sentences. You could use either one or both depending on the needs of your students. These word sheets would be great to use while you pull a small group for reteaching.
