Multiplication Strategies for Automaticity (Automatic Recall) - Using mental math strategies to multiply is a highly successful and is strongly recommended by many of the BEST authors of math resources.
The concept of using mental strategies to teach multiplication facts has been challenging to some. This method requires THINKING NOT MEMORIZATION. Several say it is easier to just memorize the facts. However, the #1 complaint among 4th, 5th, and 6th grade teachers is that students do not know their multiplication facts. Some third graders memorize them with ease but many learn them temporarily and forget them over the summer months. (Remember, memorization is the lowest level of Bloom’s Taxonomy.) Therefore, the new Texas standard stresses the importance of knowing a thought process to compute each fact mentally which will eventually lead to a deeper knowledge of multiplication facts and automaticity.
I have created this 128 slide presentation using the strategies recommended by many math experts. To support the presentation, I have created 75 practice pages that can be used over and over throughout the year. The order each fact is taught is very different than the methods using memorization. It has been proven effective and is purposefully chosen in this order. I believe it will make a difference in the way your students learn and come to know their multiplication facts year after year.
I recommend this for both 3rd and 4th grade since these methods enhance the knowledge already gained from the previous year. These slides can be separated into sections and used in workstations as a review. They can be helpful for intervention and are also self directed for remediation. The practice pages are 20 problems each which should eventually lead to a one minute timed test.
Please see the preview. (Note: I only show a small portion of the full version but the 4s strategy and practice slides will give you a good idea how the entire presentation will look.) Download and Enable Editing to Preview. Play as a slide show.
