This product will get your students fluently multiplying decimals in just two days!
Day One: Reasoning the Decimal Placement. This lesson focuses on the decimal placement in the product of a multiplication problem. Students will learn two strategies- estimation and counting decimal places (see example below). Students don't have to solve any multiplication problems. The product is always given to them. They simply use their number sense and new strategies to reason the placement of the decimal.
Example- 4.5 x 6.7 is about 5 x 7 = 35 (estimation), then I know my answer has two decimal places because the problem has two decimal places, so if 45 x 67 = 3,015, then my actual product is 30.15, which is close to my estimate of 35.
Day 2: Solving with the Standard Algorithm. In this lesson students will build on what they learned in the first lesson by actually performing the multiplication themselves. They will still use the two strategies learned in Day 1 (estimation and counting the decimal places), but they will also use the standard algorithm for multiplication, treating the numbers as they would whole numbers. Day 2 also has students multiplying decimals in real-life situations through solving word problems.
