A combination of visual math models and an interactive notebook! What could be better?
There are multiple sections of this interactive notebook.
First, students identify the number sentence associated with the shaded hundreds square.
Then, students apply their learned knowledge by coloring in the hundred square with 2 different colored pencils according to the number sentence. (Then they will solve the problem using the standard algorithm.
Lastly, students will write a number sentence using whole numbers and decimals based on the picture provided.
After students have mastered the visual models, they will discover how to multiply decimals using the standard algorithm AND the short cut when multiplying by 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 10, 100 and 1,000.
This has quickly become one of my favorite units because students actually understand the meaning behind multiplying with decimals!
