Multiplying & Dividing with Powers of Ten - Class Relay Game!
These are some of my favorite class warm-ups--you can't believe how naturally engaging these relays can be!
Give students practice or a refresher on the following skills:
* Multiplying and dividing by powers of 10
* Using fact families to find a missing factor or divisor
* Prep for future lessons on estimation and uses for compatible numbers
* Developing math fact fluency
***I have recently added a "Directions" powerpoint as the preview so you can see how these relays work. This presentation will also be included in your download so you can have an easy way to show your kids how to play, too!***
Divide students in to small groups and give each group one copy of the relay, face-down. At the same time, all groups flip the sheet over and begin working the problems. The first student who works a problem will write his or her answer in the box. The next student will use this answer to solve the next problem, continuing until all 6 problems are completed. Any incorrect answer along the way will keep a group from getting the final answer correct so it is important that they help/check each others' work and learn the delicate balance between working swiftly and maintaining accuracy.
I like to collect them in the order they are received so I can award a 'top' prize to first correct finishers. I'll give any other group that finishes correctly a smaller prize. You’ll find that it is usually not the first finishers that solve the problems correctly, which is a great lesson for students to learn for themselves.
Five different relays are included in this package. They print 2 per page, and since you only need one copy per small group it isn't a lot of work on your end to create a fun & fast warm-up or review.
