This is a task/ extended response/ constructed response (whatever your state calls it) designed to assess a students ability to multiply and divide numbers represented in scientific notation. It uses the United States' current debt as a prompt so students can have a real word application. It also requires them to analyze a worked out problem and spot/ explain the error.
I have included a rubric but not an answer key. I can provide an answer key and examples of student work if you are interested.
