This pack contains 2 interactive SmartBoard lessons. One lesson uses the area model for multiplying two fractions. The other lesson involves multiplying a fraction with a whole number.
In the area model lesson, I have fractions shaded vertically in a square and horizontally in the same size square. The student can drag the horizontally shaded fraction to overlay the vertically shaded fraction to show that the multiplication is taking a fraction of a fraction and the product is the portion that is double-shaded. The resulting grid shows the product as a portion of the entire square.
In the lesson on multiplying a whole number and a fraction is designed for students to think about the whole number as the number of groups and the fraction as what is in each group. I have cloned the fraction image so that the student can drag several copies. For example, for 2 x ¾ the student would drag 2 copies of ¾ to show 2 groups of ¾.
