This is a double set of task cards designed to support 5.NF.B.4, which involves multiplying mixed numbers using an area model. These are the third in a series of task cards I created to use with my above level fifth grade students. In this set, each quadrilateral has both the length and width including fractional dimensions, and they each include at least one dimension that is NOT a unit fraction (I used 3/4, 3/5, and 2/3). This raises the difficulty level as the pieces on the sides of each shape add up to mixed numbers more quickly and require more skill as the students combine the parts.

In this product, there are 28 cards that are SET C, which are 28 different rectangles with both dimensions labeled. There is also a set of 28 cards that are SET C2, which include the same rectangles but only the fractional side is labeled. I found that my students needed a lot of practice in identifying the dimensions and seeing how the model actually corresponded to the multiplication problem. I include an answer sheet that simply has the students record the multiplication expression each model represents. There are also answer sheets that ask for the expression and the area, or simply the area. This allowed me to differentiate within my class, and get to those who were really struggling with the model.

I was working with students who did not know the method of multiplying mixed numbers that involves converting to improper fractions and cross-canceling. These cards worked perfectly to match the distributive method of multiplying mixed numbers, where the kids multiply the whole number by the whole number, each whole number by the opposite term's fraction, and then the fractions by each other. The four partial products are combined to give the area. These models match that method perfectly because each of the partial products are clearly represented in the color-coded model. The cards could also be used with students who are proficient in the cross-canceling method of multiplying mixed numbers.

This product is a 23-page PDF file. It includes 28 task cards in Set C (4 per page), 28 task cards in the Set C2 variation (4 per page), several recording sheet options, and an answer key. It also includes a student worksheet that could be used for homework or assessment. There are 2 versions of the worksheet that match each version of the task cards. There is also a student note page (I used them for notebooks) and notes from me about the use of the cards.
