Multiplying Mixed Numbers – Pass the Paper (Cooperative Learning Activity)
This activity is designed to help your students practice and retain a long-lasting understanding of how to multiply mixed numbers. Research shows that students retain information best when they are practicing, discussing and teaching others.
For this activity students start off by completing the first of twelve problems. When they are done, they exchange or pass their paper to another student and they solve one of the available problems. This process continues until all twelve problems are completed by ideally twelve different partners.
Once the problems are completed each paper is returned to the original owner and students work in groups to evaluate and discuss the work of their peers. At this time, it is often common to see students teaching others how certain solutions were derived.
