My math lessons focus on student engagement and participation. I focus on developing conceptual understanding using manipulatives, specific language and activities. My lesson plans also include differientiated tasks that cater to the varying levels in the classroom.
1) To understand the concept of multiplication of whole numbers
2) To use mathematically specific language when talking about multiplying, and to use manipulatives, in order to give context and meaning to the operation
3) To use partner talk to clearly convey your understanding verbally
Although this is concept has been taught in earlier grades, many students do not have an understanding of what multiplication means and how to use strategies to find products (if they are not already memorized).
These skills also lay the foundation for multiplying with decimals and fractions.
Student talk will be used throughout the lesson to access prior knowledge and provide scaffolding for those students without the needed prior knowledge.
