Get your kiddos up and moving during math class!
My students ALWAYS struggle with determining the operation with fraction word problems. Before adding back in addition and subtraction of fractions, I try to make sure my students recognize the make up of a multiplication and division of fractions problem.
This Around-the-Room activity, has multiplying fractions and mixed numbers and dividing unit fractions and whole numbers. (5th Grade CCSS) The students have two options for an answer, the correct answer and the opposite operation answer. If students choose the correct answer, they will answer all 20 problems before returning to their original starting place. If students make an error, they will need to check in with the teacher to figure out where the error was made.
These type of activities are always a hit with my kiddos because it gets them out of their seats and moving. They also like to challenge each other to be the first to solve all of the problems correctly.
