Many students struggle with word problems, especially when fractions are involved. This is an engaging activity where students sort fraction word problems according to which operation they should use to solve them (multiplication or division). Students sort each problem on a sorting sheet. Then, for each problem, they rephrase the question, list the important information, solve the problem, and write the answer in a complete sentence. This activity works great individually, as partner or group work, or as a station. It includes teacher and student directions, a teacher recommendation page for implementation ideas, and a "helpful hints" page for students.
Note: Students should already have prior knowledge of how to multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers.
