Differentiating between multiplication and division in fraction word problems and correctly applying the algorithm is an important operation and problem solving skill under the Common Core and Texas TEKS. Scaffold student understanding of this difficult skill with an engaging math center activity.

Use resource for small group instruction or as an independent student center to help your students master multiplication and division of fractions, including mixed numbers.

This resource includes:

• 16 paired real-world word problems.
• a work mat to guide students through the problem solving process.
• equation cards to scaffold students through the multiplication and division algorithm, including finding the reciprocal and writing numbers as improper fractions.
• an answer key to make checking student work easier. All answers on the key are in simplest form and as a mixed number when appropriate.

(In general, (𝘢/𝘣) ÷ (𝘤/𝘥) = 𝘢𝘥/𝘣𝘤.) How much chocolate will each person get if 3 people share 1/2 lb of chocolate equally? How many 3/4-cup servings are in 2/3 of a cup of yogurt? How wide is a rectangular strip of land with length 3/4 mi and area 1/2 square mi?
