This PowerPoint lesson is an awesome way to teach students how to multiply and divide positive and negative integers in 7th grade. It directly correlates to standard [7-NS2] and [7-NS3] in the Common Core. This concept is frequently reviewed at the beginning of 8th grade because of its importance in mastering other standards. (In fact, I use this PowerPoint for my 8th grade class!) This lesson is designed to get students involved through questioning and student led discover. The group activity allows students to discover mathematical properties on their own. The answers to each example are provided at the end of the PowerPoint. Also, this presentation can be easily converted into a Flip Book for Smart Board users. I use the PowerPoint on my Smart Board as it is. This lesson can be used during an hour and a half block or split to take up two 50 minute classes.
Included is a small group activity (2-4) as well as a worksheet with answers that may be used for a homework, classwork, or quiz follow-up activity. It is a 21 question worksheet that includes computation problems, a critical thinking question, and a word problem.
