Description

Attached is a multisyllabic words with open syllables sort. It includes a word list, sorting mat, and extra freebie word list for students who need reinforcement.

Directions (for the teacher): Before allowing my students to work independently, I review the rules of multisyllabic words (with open syllables) with them. Then, they decide where to cut each word to make two syllables and glue the syllables onto their sorting mats.

I make additional copies of the sorting mat so my students can create their own multisyllabic, open syllable nonsense words when finished with the first part of the assignment. They transfer their words to notecards and play "Phonics War" with their partners. The student who reads the most words correctly wins the game.

I have administered this to small groups many times with proven results. Kids love it and LEARN PHONICS!

Directions (for the student): Cut out the multisyllabic, open syllable words. Then, cut each word in half. Glue the first syllable of each word into the first column and the second syllable in the second column. Write the word in the ‘Write it!’ column. Say each word twice. Words in black are real words and those in red are nonsense words.
