Use to reinforce advanced decoding using word parts study.
Use as a small-group practice or whole-class activity,
as part of a mix-and-match game day activity or
in a literacy center.
The goal of this coloring page activity is to provide your students practice recognizing and pronouncing word parts in multisyllabic words.
Familiarity with the individual parts of multisyllabic words is a crucial component of the advanced decoding ability necessary in the intermediate grades and above.
Learning to see and knowing how to pronounce these recurring word parts (prefixes, suffixes and bases/roots) (as well as small, already-known words inside large, many-syllable words) greatly enhances readers’ ability to tackle more advanced reading levels - particularly RL 4.0 and above. This is helpful for advanced third grade readers, crucial for fourth grade through middle school readers, and beneficial for struggling secondary readers. I’ve also used this program in second grade.
PLEASE NOTE: this activity is designed to reinforce advanced decoding instruction through recognition of multisyllabic word parts – prefixes, suffixes and bases/roots, does not provide practice on their meanings. Students do NOT need to know, understand or remember the meanings of all the words in order to benefit from this activity!
This activity is designed to complement advanced-decoding instruction you already have in place. Or you may wish to check out the year-long word parts interactive notebook, tickets out the door, flashcards, and a variety of other advanced decoding activities available from Word by Word to help you with advanced decoding instruction and practice @ http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Word-By-Word
