Are your students able to apply decoding rules to short words, but falter when they reach bigger words?
So many of my students know what -ar says... until it's part of a longer word. This game aims to solve that in an engaging way!
This shark-themed card game gives kids practice chunking multisyllabic words. The featured phonics pattern is underlined to help students build confidence and skills decoding longer words.
Perfect for practice with the "Chunky Monkey" strategy, this game features the phonics pattern "ar." Most words in this pack are 2-3 syllables long, but different levels of words are included for you to differentiate (so hopefully every student in your class can play!)
This pack includes multisyllabic words with the phonics pattern “ar.” The “ar” pattern is underlined in each word to help students decode the word!
Tp play, students draw a card. If they can read it, they keep it. To add a little surprise to the game, I also include "Shark Bite!" cards that prompt students to give back some of their cards and "Dolphin Rescue!" cards that prompt students to draw extra cards. When you cut out this game, you may wish to use less than the number of included “Shark Bite!” and “Dolphin Rescue!” cards- but they really make it more fun for the kids!
I have found this game series to be a huge help to my second and third graders as they move from simple decoding to applying decoding skills to those big, scary words. I even keep an extra copy of each game so that my students can check them out and take them home- and they love it!
