What child (or teacher) can resist feeding these cute monsters while practicing phonics skills? This resource has been created as an activity to use on the Promethean board as a fun way for your students to practice long & short vowel sounds you have previously taught. It can be used as a whole-class or small group activity.
This flipchart contains two sets of 5 slides:
• In Set 1, there are 10 pictures and two monsters on each slide. Each monster has a short or long vowel name. For example, the “a” monsters are named Jack and Jake, the “e” monsters are named Ted and Pete, and so on. The child must choose a picture from the yellow box and decide whether it has a short vowel sound or long vowel sound. He/she then moves the picture to the tummy of the monster that has the same vowel sound. (See examples 1 & 2 above.) If the answer is correct, you will hear the monster munch the picture.
• In set 2, there are 10 pictures with all 10 monsters on each slide. (See example 3.) A child must choose a picture and move it to tummy of the monster with the same vowel sound. If the answer is correct, you will hear the monster munch.
