Going to scale: Muralists Use Art and Mathematics to Decay Gang Violence
A highly powerful and insightful cooperative student project that integrated literature, art, mathematics in these secondary school classes: Art, Human Relations, and Ethnic Studies. One could also use this guided lesson in Contemporary American History. Indeed this cooperative project served as a model for other team- teaching efforts across disciplines. The concept involved designing and producing classroom murals depicting the consequences of gang activity after reading and discussing Always running: La Vida Loca written by an ex gang leader who discussed and answered questions from the students. Student muralists learned to work together in accomplishing a larger goal (creating the murals) and became teachers of a sort by leaving th4e legacy of their classroom murals. 35 $
