Disclaimer: I do not recommend doing this assignment with younger children. If you are not familiar with the story of Emmett Till, I suggest reading about it before you assign it to your students. While it is a very powerful story, it is very tragic and heart wrenching. Emmett was a young African American boy who was brutally murdered by two white men when he visited Mississippi in 1955. His murderers were found not guilty of his murder. Although it is a horrific story, it is an excellent example for older students to see the violence and hate African Americans faced during the Civil Rights Movement.
