This is a four-page exam on the muscular system, but you could rename and assign it to human anatomy and physiology students as a summative study guide for the muscular system (This document is editable). Students should have access to a human anatomy & physiology textbook and thoroughly read the chapter on the muscular system before participating in this lesson.
The first page offers a miscellany of multiple choice, fill in the blank, matching, and short answer questions covering the following terms: sarcolemma, visceral muscle, voluntary muscle, mitochondria, deltoid shape, tendon role, sarcomere physiology, muscle fibers’ ability, vastus suffix meaning, NMJ meaning, calcium-ATP relationship, sarcomere definition, sarcoplasmic reticulum, elongated muscle fiber, and function listing of skeletal muscles.
Page two offers additional fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, and short answer questions. Students name the origin of a provided muscle, identify five ways/characteristics off which muscles are named, contrast Latin root names, number the correct sequence of physiological events that lead up to a muscle contraction, contrast flexors from extensors, fill in how the loss of ATP production after death will lead to rigor mortis (includes a word bank), and identify two items a nerve cell stops receiving in order to relax.
Page three offers a table where students match definitions or functions with the following vocabulary terms: recruitment, tetanus, muscle tone, twitch, contracture, atrophy, and synergist. Students answer further questions on neurotoxins, tetanus, antagonists, English meaning of Latin root words, role of smooth muscles in blood vessels, and identify the insertion and origin of a given muscle.
Page features two tables, each with an expanded word bank. Students match the function with the following muscles in the first table: Buccinator, Triceps brachii, Sartorius, Frontalis, Trapezius, Latissimus dorsi, and Oblique. In the second table, students are presented with five scenarios where individuals experience symptoms pertaining to the muscular system. They write in the condition that best matches each set of symptoms. Conditions covered are myopathy, torn ACL, fibromyositis/cramp, plantar fasciitis, and lactic acidosis.
Students need to provide eighty-three answers to earn full credit. I included a four-page key with the answers in colored font.
This assessment is editable. It includes a two-page key with the answers in red font.
