Meaningful Listening Assignments For Older Students

This is a project-based activity or assignment that is an excellent end-of-unit project for your intermediate/senior music classes.

This assignment asks a pair of students to choose a particular piece of music (can be assigned by the teacher or chosen from a list) and examine it in a more in depth way. The assessment is differentiated by offering the choice of either a visual or auditory based assignment. Both assignments are great fun to do and can take a while to complete, depending on the knowledge & enthusiasm of your students and how in-depth you plan to get.

The assignments are:

1) Create a listening map for the repertoire piece of your choice
OR
2) Create a "sportscast" for the repertoire piece of your choice

Links to examples of each assignment are included as well as a full explanation of what is required.

This assignment can also be adapted for different grade levels depending on the pieces of music used, but students must at least have a strong foundation in the concepts of pitch, dynamics, tempo, mood/emotion, structure, and instrument classification in order for them to successfully complete the assignment.

In addition to the assignment sheet itself, this product also contains a research sheet for the student as well as a rubric for assesssment.

It is often hard to find high-quality music assessments that are not directly teacher-led. This assignment allows the students to work independently with a partner, allowing the teacher to work with small groups.
