This is a fun poetry project good for Grades 9 and higher. Students like it because they get to look at music/poetry they are already listening to. Teacher like it because it makes students dig deeper into that material.
1. Students will hand copy the song lyrics. (By copying by hand, rather than copying and pasting the lyrics from online, students slow down and pay more attention to the words.)
2. Student then gloss the poem and look for poetic devices practiced in class. (They need to write an annotation for each. Example provided.)
3. Students then write a literary paragraph on the poem, building a structured argument about material they already know quite well, which skill-builds and better ensures their future writing success.
