Music Dynamics Mosaic - Music/Art Activity! (Grades 3-10)
This MUSIC DYNAMICS MOSAIC ART ACTIVITY integrates visual arts to enrich and engage students’ understanding of musical dynamics. Students learn about and discuss musical dynamics, ranging from pianissimo to fortissimo, and then design and color square “tiles” that are combined to make a large mosaic for the music room. Each blank square contains the outline of one dynamic (PP, P, MP, MF, F, and FF), and although there are suggestions for assigning certain colors to dynamics, the simple design allows the teacher and students to have complete creative freedom when designing their “tiles.” After each tile has been completed and cut-out, they can be assembled in dynamic order from softest to loudest as one large mosaic decoration for the classroom! The size and shape of the completed mosaic will depend on the tile size chosen and how many tiles are collected.
**This resource is aligned with the current NATIONAL CORE ARTS STANDARDS

Print and distribute copies of the provided 8.5 x 11-inch blank “mosaic tiles” (pages 9 or 10) and show your students examples of what their finished tiles could look like to jumpstart their inspiration. There are two sizes available – small (pg. 9) or large (pg. 10). I personally prefer using the larger version. I have assigned specific colors to each dynamic (pg. 11), with a goal to create a flow of color after tiles are assembled together from softest to loudest. For example, I have students work with these color/dynamic assignments:
PP - Purple
P - Blue
MP - Green
MF - Yellow
F - Orange
FF - Red
However, you are free to come up with your own design and color suggestions. You can print out or show students the color assignment page provided (pg. 11), as well as the numerous examples of how students can design their tiles (pages 12 through 20). Some of my more artistic students enjoy doodling or using “Zentangle” to decorate their tiles.
