First, I find a template online for paper dice. I make about 10 dice with the letters A, B, and C written on each side. Each letter will be written on a side twice. I have students put into groups of 3-6. If they work in groups well, I sometimes let them pick their own. I think 6 students is best so they are not as shy playing or performing in front of their class. Each group picks 3 instruments/types of body percussion. They write this down on the paper provided. After they choose their 3 instruments they determine who in their group will play each instrument/do body percussion. Next, the students take turns rolling the dice. They write down which letters are shown on the lines provided. I make sure the explain they need at least one A, one B, and one C in their composition. Then the group writes 8 beat rhythms using quarter notes/rests and eighth notes. Each instrument has its own 8 beat rhythm pattern that they must perform in the form they made using the dice. Finally, the groups perform their compositions. If I have time, I compare this composition project to contemporary composers that create music in a similar way.
