Music History and Arranging Project with Assessment Tools

This music project combines research and history with arranging skills and guides students to discover how music achieves a desired response from the audience.

In this assignment, students will select a piece of music (pop songs, folk songs, anything at all) and arrange it for 3-4 like instruments. Along the way, they will produce program notes for the piece, determine an intended audience response for their arrangement, have their peers perform their arrangement, and evaluate how the audience responded to their arrangement compared to their intentions. An eye-opening, higher-order thinking challenge for high school music students!
