Ideal for 5th-8th grade music classes: start each music class with a listening journal exercise!

INCLUDES:
-Front Cover: Places for the students to write their name and grade level.
-About Me: a page for students to write in their favorite artists/songs
- Journal Entry Page: where students write while listening to the daily listening selection (copy as many as you need!)

During the first week of music class, have students fill out the "My favorite songs/musicians" box to get an idea of what your students are interested in musically.

Each following week, have a famous piece of music playing as students come in for music class. Have the title and composer of the piece up on the board for your students to copy. While they listen, students reflect on tempo, dynamics, instrumentation, and also describe what the music sounds like. They are also asked to rate the piece on a scale of 1-5 stars.

Collect the journals at the end of each music class, and you have a quick weekly "participation grade" activity for assessment!

*REQUIRES ASSEMBLY!
I provide you with the "shell" of the journal, but you can take it to your copy machine and make it as many pages as you would like.

My recommendation for assembly:
Make the journal entries double-sided, and staple just once at the top left corner (I have found that trying to staple in the middle was not as durable)
