The main attraction of this package is the presentation slides with YouTube examples to several performances of the seven movements. For each movement/planet, you will find links pertaining to the following videos:
-Listening Guide Video (Philharmonia Orchestra)
-BBC Proms Live Performance
-Static Planet View with music in the background.
There are also World History and Science connections. Topics include:
-World War I
-The Panama Canal
-Theory of Relativity
-US President Woodrow Wilson reference
-Short statistical information regarding each planet
There are several types of assessments, worksheets, activities and handouts included in this pack (7 Total). Please see below for descriptions of what is included within each assessment:
GUIDED LISTENING ACTIVITIES:
-LISTENING JOURNAL (VERSION 1): This is like a SQUILT Journal for the student to complete while listening to the piece. The student is asked to summarize the movement, and provide information about dynamics, tempo, instruments, and emotions present in the movement.
-LISTENING JOURNAL (VERSION 2): This assessment is just like the one above. However, in the first version, the tempo section has BPMs listed next to the tempo. In this version, the description is next to the tempo instead of the BPM.
FOLLOW ALONG ASSESSMENTS:
-PHILHARMONIA VIDEO FOLLOW ALONG QUESTIONS: This activity is made up of short, 4-5 question assessments to go along with each video created by the Philharmonia Orchestra. Each video is short and gives a detailed description of the elements present in each movement. There is also a rating system given, asking students to rate the movement by coloring the planets. (Grades 5+)
-PRESENTATION FOLLOW ALONG QUESTIONS: This is a guided worksheet for students to work on while listening and participating in lecture from the Keynote or PowerPoint presentation (Grades 5+)
-EXIT SLIPS (COLOR AND BW): There are 14 different pre-made selections of questions.
-EXIT SLIP TEMPLATES (COLOR AND BW): This is a Word template where you can create your own question.
-CROSSWORD PUZZLE (Grades 5+)
-WORD SEARCH (Grades 3+)
As with all classes, only you know your students and how well they perform with certain activities. You are always encouraged to create your own assessments as well in addition to the resources I have created.
There are two types of presentations included. One is for Apple Keynote, the other is for Microsoft PowerPoint. PLEASE KNOW! Apple can open PowerPoint (if it is installed), but Microsoft cannot open the Keynote file. If you have a Windows machine, do not open the Apple Keynote file.
There is a blank, editable slide provided at the end of each presentation if you want to include more information. You can always delete and add slides to better accommodate your instructional time.
To access the YouTube videos: If using at school, make sure your district does not block YouTube. You can always make use of this activity without YouTube, just delete the slides with the examples. THE VIDEO LINKS WILL NOT WORK UNLESS YOU ARE IN PRESENTATION MODE. If you are in edit mode, the presentation will think you are trying to edit the file, and will not take you to the link provided.
THIS IS A LARGE FILE AND COULD TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO DOWNLOAD DEPENDING ON YOUR INTERNET SPEED.
