This project works well in a Fundamentals of Design, Typography or InDesign unit. Creative freedom is challenged by strict parameters set in place in order to give students an opportunity to explore how type can be used as a design element. Students design and construct an accordion booklet inspired by their favorite music lyrics (or a poem)—they must visually communicate using only one typeface and color. Feel free to add to the design challenge by eliminating students' ability to use any color but black.
Note: I allow students to repeat lyrics to add emphasis. Also, I have students practice using an xacto knife (after demonstrating and teaching on safety) with this resource from Karen Kavett: http://karenkavett.com/blog/2115/xacto-knife-cutting-practice-sheets.php. If a student can turn in a nearly perfect sheet, they can receive 2-5 extra credit points toward this project, plus their covers turn out nicer.
The project file is a .docx file, but it was created in Google Docs and can be edited in Google Docs or Microsoft Word.
Students really enjoy listening to music during this project, but be sure to go over specific can and cannot's in regards to their music use/phone use beforehand.
This digital product is a zip file that includes project details, a rubric, and images of examples.
