Students listen to the song Auld Lang Syne by Dan Fogelberg which can be accessed via YouTube.com.
It is NOT RELIGIOUS. If you have any doubts about that please listen to the song first before purchasing this item. The song is really a story that takes place on Christmas Eve but has nothing to do with celebrating Christmas.
I have updated this activity a lot!
I have created a "pre-teach" review PowerPoint of simple past tense verbs to do before the lyric study.
I have made a handout for students to write down the present and simple past tense verbs that will be in the song (and extras)
As students listen to this beautiful song with easy to follow story line, they will fill in past tense verbs they hear. After they have listened to the song twice or three times, they can go back and and circle other past tense verbs they see. This approach follows the PACE approach to teaching grammar. But in a remixed kind of way. After playing the song twice we go over the answers and then break down or "study" the meaning of the lyrics.
Students then do a think-pair-share with their partners for the discussion questions that are included. After we share all of our answers this sometimes leads to a nice discussion about the lyrics or about music and other songs. Students can often be wonderful resources for good songs with easy or interesting lyrics so pay attention for this part! This is an excellent end of the week fun activity.
