In this unit, the students will work together to create a simple score for a percussion instrument performance. They will achieve this by exploring how they can use symbols to represent sounds. The students will name instruments, describe the sound they make and will explore how sounds are created in different instruments. They will suggest how instruments are sorted in a regular orchestra and they will sort the class percussion instruments. They will then design a picture card to represent a group of instruments. They will use these cards to create a sequence of sounds and to explore different musical concepts such as dynamics and tempo. The students will then create a simple musical composition and perform it as a class orchestra to the rest of the school or another class.
