This activity can be used as either an in-class assignment or as a homework assignment. Students are tasked with creating a choir of their own, exploring the popular music distribution website (JW Pepper), and then choosing a song for their choir to perform. Students then will write a paragraph on their choice and turn it in as a product of their work.
I wrote this assignment for my middle school chorus classes, but it can easily be changed to suit high school choruses, middle or high school bands and orchestra classes as well!
My classes truly enjoyed this activity - they were surprised to see all of the different types of music on the site! I told me students that I would even consider using one of their song choices for our upcoming spring concert and they were very excited about that! Some alternatives would be to tell the students to look for a specific type of song (holiday, voicing, era, multicultural, etc.).
