1. The beginning of the lesson students are urged to define rap, and then begin to explore the similarities it has with poetry. The purpose is for students to recognize that even though a lot of rap that comes out of the mainstream gets a bad rep, it can be a very aspect when applied appropriately by artists.
In order for any videos to work in this lesson plan, you will need internet!

2. Section two of the lesson plan is a "Is it Shakespeare, or Hip-Hop?" game. Students will hear quotes spoken that were by Shakespeare himself or a Hip-Hop artist. The slideshow provides the answer as to who wrote the rhyme after each rhyme.

3. THE ACTIVITY:
Students then are given a brief history of Harriet Tubman, and will begin writing a rap/poem about her. Students write a rap/poem using all forms of Figurative Language from Assonance to Onomatopoeia. Simile, Metaphor, Personification, Alliteration, and Hyperbole are all included in the activity.

4. When students are done with the activity, they may recite their rap/poem to a partner. If you would like to do things differently for your classroom you could have them present their rap/poems to the class publicly, or just for extra credit.
