Music has always played a role in almost every single film throughout History, but the question is how important is it really? Would we still go to the movies, or subscribe to Netflix and watch TV shows if music were not present?
This lesson plan is divided into three Sections. This lesson should last you 2 - 3 weeks, as you should leave plenty of time for students to prepare for the trial before it begins. I usually let them prepare for 1 or 2 full classes until the actual debate, it also allows them to build their excitement as well!
Students will be shown the movie clip of Jurassic park where they see Dinosaurs for the very first time in Jurassic Park the First movie. They will then be shown the same clip without music and will be very bored. This will give students a clear perspective of the importance of music in film before they choose which side they want to be on. Some Should
conclude that yes it is iconic, and extremely important, but films could still survive without but would just not end up being as good.
Students will choose one side - and defend it to the end in a court trial. Slide show presents the court trial in the following sections:
Film Would Survive Without Music - Opening Statement (3 min Timer)
Film Would Survive Without Music - Provides Evidence (3 min Timer)
Film Would NOT Survive Without Music - Opening Statements (3 min Timer)
Film Would NOT Survive Without Music - Provides Evidence (3 min Timer)
Both Sides may ask questions & Debate (Endless Timer)
Film Would Survive Without Music - Closing Statements
Film Would NOT Survive Without Music - Closing Statements
As a music teacher I know this will be very difficult for you to remain non-bias. Just remember it's only a critical thinking exercise at the end of the day ;)
