This is a great lesson for even the most challenging classes! It will teach your students not only the importance of music in film, but it is a great lesson to help students know and understand the Seven Elements of Music.

Section 1. "Hook"

Students begin class by being shown a movie trailer with music only.. Throughout this piece of music that is designed for movie trailers there are captions as to what the music is trying to emphasize, capture, & accomplish.

Section 2. Information Over-load

Students then begin a process of first being introduced to one of the Seven Elements of Music. After students understand the element, then they are shown a movie with no music and are instructed to think of how they would use that specific element if they were to compose the music for that movie trailer. This step process goes on for the rest of the Elements of Music.

Section 3. The Project

The students will choose a movie trailer, and a song of their choice that they would use for that trailer. Students will play the role as the Film Director choosing the music for his/her movie trailer. Students will then begin making their poster board that contains the Dynamics, Form, Rhythm, Texture, Harmony, Melody, and Tempo of the song they chose to use for the movie.

This is designed to be the final lesson in my Music in Film Curriculum, and it is a massive project. This Music in Film lesson a very cognitively demanding task as compared to the other music in film lessons. This lesson because of the difficulty lets students dig really deep in getting to know one movie clip in particular. As students critically think and analyze how they would apply the seven musical elements to a movie scene, it would be too overwhelming for them to be exposed to several different clips which is why you will find there is only one.
