This is a Music in Film Curriculum designed for Elementary Learners! These activities are fun, engaging, and age appropriate for young learners to experience one of the most beautiful, artistic, and creative ways music has changed film!
This Music in Film Kids Unit is split into three different sections:
1. Section One - Introducing Short Stories
Students are shown fundamental concepts to writing short stories, as it will be applied to them writing a short film later on. This describes how writers keep in concepts of Plot, Setting, Climax, and Resolution as they are writing stories.
2. Section Two - Introducing Sonata Form
Students are then introduced to a listening activity of two different pieces of music. One piece is a song by Beethoven, the other is of Chopin. These two videos perfectly illustrate the similarities between short stories & sonata form, and how music is structured in a similar way to short stories. The video takes students on a journey through a rain storm, and up and down a mountain as the music intensifies and calms down in the end. The music and visuals in the video demonstrate for your students how music and stories set themes, build in intensity, and resolve in the end.
3. Section Three - Writing Short Stories for a Short Film
Students them begin three listening activities of different film music. Each film music played is more modern, and is not classical music from before which was used in the mini lesson. Three different pieces of film music is then played for students. Students begin writing & illustrate their story setting & characters for the first film music exemplar, they write illustrate the problem their characters face in the next piece which is more intense film music. Last students listen to a final piece of music which is a great inspirational piece to listen to as they write & illustrate the resolution to their story.
4. Section Four - Read out or Act Out Activities.
It is then up to you the teacher to decide whether you want to have students read their short stories aloud to the class, or act them out either individually or in small groups. You could also choose to do both activities, which is why this product could last you 2 to 3 weeks, considering this is a wonderful writing & drawing exercise that could be done even more than once with your students! Practice makes perfect, and I encourage you to challenge your students to write & draw many stories utilizing this wonderful resource as a perfect prompt!
