As music teachers we can sometimes forget that it is important to touch on the art of sound. Students are taken through the journey of creating sound effects for movies. The lesson plan focuses on The Art of Foley, and reenacting sound effects we see in several short films. This lesson includes several activities which will attract and engage your students for several weeks.

Students are first shown a simple movie clip of a fisherman as people in a studio are creating sound effects for all the actions taking place in a film. For example, when the video clip shows a police officer walking down a hallway, it shows another man in a recording studio walking in place, recording the footsteps.

Activity 1:

Students will begin warming up by recreating sound effects for small individual objects/animals/vehicles/people behind a green screen. Each can individual or with a partner work to use materials in the classroom to recreate the sounds of what they see in the short video clip.

Activity 2:

Students will then begin taking on a larger task of recreating sound effects for a short clip as a group. There are 9 Short films that students will be working in groups recreating sound effects for, and each group will present for the class using objects around the room.

Activity 3:

The last activity will be a large scale activity that involves the whole class working together to recreate sound effects of an entire film. For this activity, there is a printable sheet that is cut into several pieces. Each piece that is cut (by you before class) has a Scene #, (Scene 1, Scene 2, Etc.) and a specific job. Each student will be handed one card that tells them one specific sound effect they must prepare to reenact for a particular scene. The Lesson then goes scene by scene, event by event, as each individual student in the class plays their role via the card they received.
