Music has a lot of history, and the big question is - Does Music change to fit the pop-culture of the day? Or is music the primary reason that pop-culture changes due to it's impact on us? This lesson plan is divided into three Sections. This lesson should last you 2 - 3 weeks, as you should leave plenty of time for students to prepare for the trial before it begins. I usually let them prepare for 1 or 2 full classes until the actual debate, it also allows them to build their excitement as well!
Students will be shown a few videos that will get them thinking. The first video is the evolution of music from Gregorian Chant, to Classical, to blues, to jazz, to rock, to pop, and to hip-hop years 1600 to 2010. But the question will remain to students: Why does it change?
Students will choose one side - and defend it to the end in a court trial. Slide show presents the court trial in the following sections:
Music Changes Culture - Opening Statements (5 min Timer)
Music Changes Culture - Provides Evidence (5 min Timer)
Culture Changes Music - Opening Statements (5 min Timer)
Culture Changes Music - Provides Evidence (5 min Timer)
Both Sides may ask questions & Debate (Endless Timer
Music Changes Culture - Closing Statements
Culture Changes Music - Closing Statements
The Lesson ends with Two addition videos which validates both sides, because both sides will end up making great points, and will both end up being right at the end!
