Lesson Structure:

Section 1. "HOOK"
Students are shown a very funny video clip that is a great example of the three sections of short stories which also greatly compares to how Sonata Form in music is structured. The clips clearly illustrate for students the Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution all while also giving them a good laugh.

Section 2. Sonata Form Lesson
Students are then presented a piece of music that is structured in the same way as the story they just watched, but in musical form. The piece is the "Rain Drop Prelude" by the pianist Chopin. It represents rain and how it starts out small, grows into a large storm, and then slowly dies away.

Section 3. The Activity
Students then listen to a Dub-Step version of the Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven that has a very apparent Sonata Form Structure.

Students write their own exposition while listening to the Exposition Section of the piece. I have trimmed the music so that once the Exposition ends the music stops before it gets to the Development Section.

When students have finished their Expositions, the next slide will direct them to write the rising action, climax, and falling action of their story. The Development section will automatically begin playing as they begin writing, and will stop playing automatically before it reaches the recapitulation section.

Students then hear the Recapitulation section of the and write the resolution or conclusion to their story as the slideshow will automatically play the Recapitulation section of the piece.

When students finish their stories, the entire piece will be played for them without stop as they read their stories to a partner. Students will read the exposition of their story during the exposition of the music, the Climax during the Development section, and the resolution during the Recapitulation.
