This is an amazing tool for you Jazz Band students, but also reinforces their skills in math. Students would never guess how Music and Geometry Share Common Characteristics, and this will show them visually after they have used Geometry skills to see the Geometrics of Scales and Chords

This Lesson Plan is Divided (no pun intended) into three sections

Section 1.
Students will be taken through a step-by-step process of creating a circle with 12 points using a pencil compass and a ruler. All 12 musical tones will be written at each point, with C starting at the top.

Section 2.
Students will then be taught the concept of Whole Step, and Half Steps which students get some heavy practice learning in this lesson.

Section 3.
Students then are given the Whole Step/Half Step Formula on how to create a Major Scale. Students start at C, and using the Whole whole half whole whole whole half formula they should wind back up at C on the top of their chart.

Students can then trace that shape, turn it in any direction and figure out any other major scale by turning the top on any other note!

Students are also shown the formula for the Minor Scale, Chromatic Scale, and Whole tone scale And can see the Geographical Shape that scale creates.

Section 3.

Students can then trace that shape, turn it in any direction and figure out any other Major Chord by turning the top on any other note!

Students are also shown the formula for the Minor Chord, Diminished Chord, and Augmented Chord And can see the Geographical Shape that scale creates.
