During a music lesson on musical notes, math will be integrated into the music lesson. In a third grade classroom students are starting to learn about basic fractions. Fractions can be compared to rhythm and notes in music. In this lesson, students will learn about quarter, half and whole notes. Then they will compare rhythm notes to the fractions of 1, ½ and ¼. Students will be able to express their beats through musical percussion while comparing the notes to fractions. Connections will be made in comparing a whole note to a whole number of 1, the fraction of ½ will be compared to a half note, and the fraction of ¼ will be compared to a quarter note. Sequencing of fractions will be made along with patterns of notes. With partners, students will make up their own fraction patterns and then practice the patterns on their rhythm sticks.
