This is a musical version of the popular fly swatter game! It's a great way to assess if students know their rhythms while still having fun. To play, divide class into two (or more) teams. Display some or all of the colorful cartoon fly rhythm cards on the board. Each team receives one fly swatter and sends one player to the board. The teacher claps/says/plays one of the rhythms displayed and the first student who “swats” the correct rhythm earns a point for their team. Pass fly swatters to a different teammate each round so that all students have a chance to participate. There are 24 different rhythm cards each showing two measures in 4/4 time using quarter notes, quarter rests, half notes, half rests, eighth notes, eighth rests, whole notes, whole rests, dotted quarter notes, dotted half notes, and syncopated rhythms. A page of blanks has also been included so that you can add additional rhythms.
