This is a self-guided internet research project which aims to introduce students to a wide variety of musical genres. Encourage your students to listen to things they may not have heard of before.
This project was inspired by the website EveryNoise.com which contains a map of every type of musical genre its web crawler could find. Clicking on a genre plays a short example of that type of music. Clicking on the arrows next to the genre name displays a map of many example artists/songs to represent that genre.
The steps of the project are:
♫ Go to http://everynoise.com to view their genre map.
♫ Select 5 different genres/sub-genres from different areas of the
page - this will give you a sample of the wide-spectrum that
exists in our musical world.
♫ Listen to 5 different examples of each genre and describe what
you hear in the words, instruments, etc.
♫ Research each genre you picked to learn what defines it. You
may use Wikipedia, http://www.musicgenreslist.com/ or
The download contains the following pages:
